What of Eros and human civilization? What exactly was the purpose of linking together these two very disparate, almost opposite terms, Eros and civilization, and what was the combination of the two words intended to mean and convey by the one who linked them together? As a matter of fact and historical record, in addition to Eros being the proper name of an ancient Greek god, the son of Aphrodite, whose express mythological purpose was to excite erotic love in the gods and men, the word was used quite liberally by an actively committed American communist and professed Marxist, Herbert Marcuse, in a book that he wrote in 1955, “Eros and Civilization: A Philosophical Inquiry into Freud,” in order to promote the idea that the unbridled and immoral sexual conduct of human beings produces social disorganization that opposes capitalism, which he called the grand step toward Marxism.
In that book, Marcuse, a German Marxist academician who, in 1933, immigrated to the United States, had a provocative agenda. In it he attempted to do, by sophistry, what the infamous theoretician of communism, Karl Marx, had not done in his Communist Manifesto; that is, succeed in producing a working conspiratorial methodology for incrementally turning a constitutional republic into a communist dictatorship. The German Frankfort School of active conspiring communists included, at Germany’s University of Frankfort, numerous communist academicians including Herbert Marcuse.
As a result of the deadly Nazi reprisals against communists in Germany from 1934 until the fall of the Third Reich, the members and supporters of the Frankfort School’s communist movement immigrated to the United States where they could legally carry on their surreptitious efforts to undermine constitutional government, which they were unable to do in Germany. Marcuse theorized, in the early 1950s, that by his arrogantly sophistic disputations of Max Weber’s, Emanuel Kant’s, and Adam Smith’s cogent defense of capitalism, and by perverting the ideas and symbolism of Sigmund Freud with the untenable premise that work, industry, and civilized progress should take a back seat to uninhibited sex, which he called Eros, he used the unprecedented economic changes that had occurred in the USA between 1929 and 1950 to evoke a social revolution among American youth to advance the progression of Marxism.
The social crucible that was the USA during the post-World War II years, was greatly influenced through the interaction of three significant social variables that, combined together in the American mixing bowl, produced significant change in the USA. These three prevailing catalysts, 1) the significantly altered eco-social climate as a result of the Great Depression’s redistribution of American wealth (the diminution in value of the American family), 2) the introduction of mind-altering drugs into American culture as a means of individual escapism, and 3) the sexually-oriented music of rock and roll, that sexually stimulated the children of the generation of Americans born during, and in the decade following, World War II, to indiscriminately perceive Herbert Marcusa’s “Eros.
.. ,” after 1955, as a means of rebellion during a period when capitalism was accused by communists and socialists of fomenting class conflict.
