Bingo supplies may be quirky business. Whereas visiting a customer’s bingo the other day, I noticed that the bingo caller was calling bingo on his own without the advantage of a timer. While this caller was experienced, and had a great feel for the bingo players, he was nonetheless varying his pace sufficient to be a problem.
With no timer, this bingo caller would typically lose track and start to call too slowly. To which, bingo players would soon grumble, “Velocity Up!”. Typically this bingo caller would accelerate the pace, inflicting bingo daubers in gamers’ fingers to hurry up in a flurry to get their numbers daubed.
Bingo players do not like inconsistency. Variable calling speeds are going to harass them at least, or really upset them if they miss a bingo. Regardless of this bingo caller being solid in most respects, he was hurting his bingo with his lack of consistency. He needed to use a timer to control his call speed. Imagine it or not, little things like this will cause a bingo to lose bingo players.
So, the place does a bingo caller find a timer? Most bingo machines come geared up with timing gadgets which will set a steady tempo for callers. If this is unavailable, a simple and inexpensive metronome will do the trick. Even a watch or a seconds hand on a clock is better than your bingo caller simply winging it on his own.
In my buyer’s case, once we requested the bingo caller why he didn’t use the timer on his bingo gear , he said he thought it was broken. Funny thing is the timer wasn’t broken. The bingo caller just didn’t know how to use it, and was too afraid to try. As soon as he was shown the way it labored and the way easy it was, he began calling the bingo numbers at a consistent pace. The bingo players were a lot happier with him as a result.
